The Podilian dance "Kryvuliak" was recorded in the village of Tarasivka, Kamianets-Podilskyi District, Khmelnytskyi Region, by Petro Havryliuk, a lecturer at the Kamianets-Podilskyi College of Cultural Education. In 1979, the dance enriched the repertoire of the college's " Podilski Vizеrunky" (Podilian Patterns) folk dance ensemble. Until then, neither the name nor the dance "Kryvuliak" had appeared in the registry of Ukrainian folk dances. With the support of Petro Havryliuk, Oleksandr Nebesnyi staged the dance for the "Podillia" Folklore and Ethnographic Ensemble affiliated with the Khmelnytskyi Regional Department of Vocational Education.

DANCE DESCRIPTION: “Kryvuliak”
Dance Description:
Number of performers: eight couples.
Before the dance begins, the young women are in the first left wing, and the young men are in the third right wing.
Eight measures of the musical introduction are performed.
The First Figure (32 measures)
Measures 1-16. The young women perform a gliding step (movement No. 1) starting with the right foot, moving forward as shown in Fig. 1. The dancers always face the audience.
Measures 17-28. The young women continue the movement, turn to the left (facing the center of the circle), and bring their arms together along their sides. The young women on the outside place their free hands on their waists.
Measure 29-32. The first four young women, continuing to move with a gliding step, step out to form the first line. The second four young women perform an alternating step (movement No. 2) and form the second line (Fig. 1). They separate their arms and lower them alongside their bodies.
The Second Figure (16 measures)
Measures 1-4. The young women perform four gliding steps (movement No. 1) forward and two Podillia steps (movement No. 3). At the same time, the young men enter from the back wings using simple dance steps. Their hands are clasped at their waists.
Measures 5-8. The young women perform the sway (movement No. 4) twice backward, then take two simple steps forward and stamp with their right foot. They then step onto their right foot and stamp with their left foot. The young men continue moving; at the end of the 8th measure, they turn to face the audience.
Measures 9-10. The young women remain in place and turn to the left, glancing at the young men. The young men stomp with their right foot, then stomp with their left foot. Every other young man takes a step forward with his right foot (the rest take a step back), opening their arms to second position. They stomp with their left foot and bring their hands to their waists.
Measures 11-12. The young women turn to the right, glancing at the young men. The young men clap their hands twice and take a large step to the side: the first line to the right, the second line to the left. They open their arms to second position. Then they stomp (the first line with the left foot, the second with the right), and bring their hands to their waists.
Measures 13-16. The young men perform four Podillia steps in place. The young women turn their backs to the audience and, with a gliding step (movement No. 1), walk toward the young men. On the 16th measure, the dancers form pairs: the young man holds the young woman’s waist with his right hand and her right hand with his left. The young woman places her left hand on her partner’s shoulder.
Third Figure (32 measures)
Measures 1-4. Pairs move in a Podillia step (movement No. 3) - the first line moves backward, the second line moves forward - as shown in Fig. 2, forming two lines (Fig. 3).
Measures 5-8. The young women take simple steps to the left side, passing under the young man’s arm, and perform two swaying movements (movement No. 4). They lower their arms along their sides. The young men take simple steps to the right side and perform a prysiadka (squat-kick) (movement No. 5) on their right leg, followed by a stomp. They place their hands on their waists. The partners stand facing each other and sideways to the audience.
Measure 9. The dancers in each pair take two steps toward each other while clapping their hands twice. As they do so, they line up in a single file, touching each other’s right shoulders.
Measure 10. The dancers perform a lunge (movement No. 6) with their right leg. They lower their arms along their sides.
Measure 11. The young men and women stomp twice, turning 90° to the right in place, and end up facing each other (the young woman with her back to the audience).
Measure 12. The dancers perform a lunge (movement No. 6) with the left foot. Arms remain in the previous position.
Measures 13–16. The young men perform four Podillia steps (movement No. 3) in place, gradually bringing their arms to their waists. The young women perform a light run (on every 8th measure) around the young men, glancing at them. Their arms are lowered along their sides.
Measures 17–28. All dancers join hands along their sides and move in movement No. 1 along the “crooked dance” line.
Measures 29–32. The dancers, performing an alternating step (movement No. 2), line up in pairs in two lines. The young man and woman in a pair hold hands: their joined and free hands are held at their sides. At the end of measure 32, all dancers perform a stomp. The dancers’ joined right hands rest on the woman’s right shoulder, and their joined left hands are held at second position.
The Fourth Figure (32 measures)
The music slows down.
The dancers do not separate their hands while performing this figure.
Measures 1-3. Keeping their hands paired, the dancers perform a lunge (movement No. 6) starting with the left foot.
Measure 4. The young men take two dance steps on their left foot and move to the right side. The young women, passing under the left arm, take two steps and move to the left side. The couples end up with their backs to the audience, their arms crossed at waist level.
Measures 5-7. The dancers repeat the movements from measures 1-3 starting on the left foot.
Measure 8. The dancers repeat the movements from measure 4 in reverse, but the young woman stands in front of the young man, facing the audience (Fig. 4), with their hands joined above their heads.
Measures 9-12. While maintaining their positions as a couple, the dancers take four simple steps forward on the right foot and two Podillia steps (movement No. 3) in place.
Measures 13-14. The couples take four simple steps backward.
Measures 15-16. While performing two Podillia steps in place, the young men turn the young women to the right and turn themselves. The couples stand with their left sides facing the audience; the young woman is to the right of the young man. The hand positions for the couple are the same as in measures 1-4.
Measures 17-30. The dancers repeat the movements of measures 1-14 with their sides facing the audience. While performing the movements of measures 9-14, the dancers look toward the audience.
Measures 31-32. The young men turn the young women to the right, and the couples end up facing the audience. The young man holds the young woman’s left hand with his right hand, places his left hand on her waist, and looks at his partner. The young woman holds her right hand slightly below second position.
The Fifth Figure (16 measures)
Measures 1-8. The couples perform a counterclockwise turn in place: the young men perform the Podillia step (movement No. 3) in place, while the young women, maintaining their previous arm positions, circle around the young men twice using the alternating step (movement No. 2).
Measures 9-16. All couples move in a large circle counterclockwise, performing the alternating step (movement No. 2). The hand positions within each couple remain unchanged. At the end of the 16th measure, the young men, leaving the young women in a large semicircle, run out into two lines (Fig. 5).
The Sixth Figure (32 measures)
Measures 1-4. The young men perform a lunge (movement No. 6) from the left foot, turning counterclockwise 360°, with their arms held straight out to the sides, palms facing down. At the same time, the young women perform a sway (movement No. 4) on their right foot twice, with their arms hanging down alongside their bodies. Then, they turn 360º to the right on their right foot, simultaneously bringing their bent left leg (heel raised and toes extended) up to the ankle of their right leg behind them, and tap the floor with their left foot.
Measures 5-8. The young men perform movement No. 7, moving slightly forward while turning their torsos with their right shoulders forward. The arms move to second position through the preparatory and first positions. The young women perform a side lunge (movement No. 8) on the right leg for two beats. The right arm is held alongside the torso, and the left hand is pressed against the chest with the palm facing inward. They repeat the lunge to the other side on the left leg for two beats.
Measures 9-10. The young men perform the Podillia key (movement No. 9). The young women do two stomps in place on the right foot, with their arms along their sides. Then they perform a triple stomp (movement No. 10), moving forward while clasping their hands at the waist.
Measures 11-12. The young men perform a stomp on the spot with their right foot; immediately, they extend their left leg straight out to the side at a 45º angle, opening their right arm to third position and their left arm to second position. They hop on their right foot, keeping their left leg and arms in their previous positions. Then they perform a triple stomp (movement No. 10), lowering their arms along their sides. The young women perform two stomps in place on their left foot, with their arms crossed at the waist. Then they perform a triple stomp while moving backward, lowering their arms along their sides.
Measures 13-16. The young men perform an alternating step (movement No. 2), step out to the side lines, and stop facing the center of the stage, bringing their arms from first position to second. The girls perform an alternating step and step out into two lines (Fig. 6), arms along the body.
Measures 17-20. The young women perform a lunge (movement No. 6) from the left leg. They gradually raise their arms to second position, bring them back to first position, and fold them across the waist. The young men perform a lunge (movement No. 6) with arms held straight, turning 90º toward the audience.
Measures 21-22. The young women take four steps forward on their right foot. On the last step, they squat slightly on their left leg, lift their right leg up to their left shin, place their hands on their waists, and turn their upper bodies so that their left shoulder faces forward. The young men perform two Podillia steps in place, with their hands clasped at their waists.
Measures 23-24. The young women take two Podillia steps (movement No. 3) backward, lowering their arms along their sides. The young men approach their partners with an alternating step (movement No. 2) (opening their arms to second position) and stop slightly behind them.
Measures 25-26. The young women perform two stomps on their right foot, placing their hands on their waists. They rise onto their half-toes twice, simultaneously folding their arms across their chests and tilting their torsos to the right and then to the left. The young men hop onto their left foot and perform a stomp with their right foot into second position. They place their hands on their waists, their gaze directed at the young women.
Measures 27-28. The young women repeat the movements from measures 25–26 on their left foot. The young men repeat the movements from measures 25–26, opening their right hand to third position and their left hand to second position.
Measures 29-32. The young women perform a lunge (movement No. 6) starting on the left foot, turning to the left, with their hands remaining in front of their chests. The young women in the first line move to the left side of the young men; those in the second line remain in place. The young men remain in their previous position and watch the young women. On the last beat, all dancers turn to face the circle and join hands.
The Seventh Figure (32 measures)
Measures 1-32. All dancers move in a chain along the “crooked dance” line (Fig. 7), performing the running step (movement No. 1). For the last eight measures, the dancers, facing the audience along the proscenium, exit to the first right wing.
